Therapy information

Stimulation current therapy is an important component of electrotherapy. Stimulation currents are transmitted to the tissue to be treated via electrodes (plate electrodes, vacuum electrodes, adhesive electrodes). Depending on the type of current and the selection of parameters (i.e. pulse shape, pulse duration, pause time, frequency, intensity), stimulation currents can produce the following effects in the treatment area:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Venous insufficiency/ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Strengthening the muscles
  • Iontophoresis

According to their origin and specific mode of action in the tissue, the following classification of the various stimulation currents can be made:

  • Medium frequency currents: these are alternating currents that are created by superimposing a base frequency (2-9.5 KHz) with a modulation frequency (0-250 Hz). With AMF current (amplitude-modulated medium frequency current) and medium frequency currents for muscle stimulation (MT and KOTS), this superimposition already takes place in the device. The pre-modulated current can therefore be delivered to the patient via just two electrodes. With classic interference current (IF), on the other hand, the two frequencies are only superimposed in the patient’s tissue, which is why four electrodes are always required for treatment. The high therapeutic effectiveness of medium frequency currents is due to their minimal skin irritation and pronounced depth effect, which means they are well accepted by the patient.
  • Pulse currents with frequencies below 1000 Hz are considered low frequency. The various low frequency currents DF, MF, CP, LP (diadynamic currents), UR (ultra stimulation current), HV (high voltage current), FaS (faradic threshold current), TENS (mono- or bidirectional rectangular pulses) and T/R (exponential current) can cover the entire above-mentioned application area. In contrast to medium frequency currents, certain low frequency currents can also be used to increase muscle strength.
  • Galvanic current (G) is a direct current that flows through the tissue with constant energy. Galvanic current is mainly used to stimulate blood circulation and reduce pain, as well as for iontophoresis (introducing a preparation using current).
Selected use cases

Electrotherapy has an extremely wide range of applications. It is ideal for treating, among other things:

  • Osteoarthritis (knee joint)
  • CRPS Stage I and II
  • Epicondylitis
  • Radicular syndrome
  • Spasticity treatment according to Hufschmidt/Jantsch
  • Acceleration trauma
  • Chondropathia patellae
  • Joint effusion
  • Pain syndrome, postoperative
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
